Daljit Thind: An altruistic and influential B.C. developer

Darpan News Desk Darpan, 17 Mar, 2017 04:15 PM

“Surround yourself with smart people, listen and weigh in on what they have to say and then take the opportunity that presents itself.”

Undoubtedly because he came from humble beginnings himself, BC real estate developer Daljit Thind extended a life-changing reach to Syrian refugees and offered them homes back in 2015, around the time when they were expected to arrive in Vancouver.

Thind explained back then he felt these refugees needed support to ensure their new life in Canada would be comfortable and, most of all, restorative. He also felt compelled by his beliefs that state that those who are born in Punjab into the Sikh community must give back to the community whatever they earn – a lesson he learned early. That philosophy serves as the foundation for how
Thind operates his multi-million-dollar empire – THIND Properties Ltd.

Described as a soft-spoken yet forthright, tenacious and altruistic entrepreneur who will conduct all business transactions with the utmost integrity, the CEO and founder of THIND Properties is widely respected in development circles. To date, his company has built more than a thousand homes throughout Metro Vancouver and a thousand more are already planned for development in the next few years.
Real estate was not even supposed to be part of Thind’s career plans. Trained and employed as a pharmacist in Ludhiana, Punjab, Thind soon learned his academic credentials were not recognized when he arrived in Canada, but that did not slow him down. Unknowingly, he began to construct the cornerstone of his future as he explored the trades and educated himself in everything from plumbing to carpentry.

Today the husband, father of three and community-minded volunteer runs a thriving real estate business that has been in operation for 20 years and is ranked as one of the leading property development groups in the Lower Mainland. With various Georgie awards in hand (Best Kitchen – Multi-family 2016) and finalist for the 2017 Georgies (Best Advertising Campaign, Best Sales Centre, and Grand Georgie: Marketing Campaign of the Year) the company has staked out a reputation of being leaders in the industry.

The latest THIND development, Lumina Brentwood, is THIND’s largest development to date. Located on the south side of Beta Avenue in Burnaby, Lumina is a four-tower residential project that is conveniently located only minutes away from the Brentwood Town Centre Skytrain station. This family-friendly project features units for sale in one, two and three-bedroom configurations and all include full-sized appliance packages. Pre-sales are expected to begin in the spring with the first phase of construction scheduled to be
completed by 2019. If past THIND projects are any indication, these units will not be for sale long.

No stranger to environmentally conscious construction, among Thind’s developments are Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified homes. LEED is an internationally recognized rating system that is the mark of excellence for green building standards in more than 132 countries. The Skyway Tower development in Vancouver marked Thind’s first LEED project and one he is extremely proud of, he said. “It’s the most environmentally friendly and energy-efficiency building that produces 40 per cent more in energy savings than other buildings,” Thind told DARPAN in the summer of 2014.

Thind’s influence is far-reaching and has been recognized for many years. In 2014, he was named one of Vancouver’s most powerful people. That same year he was one of only 200 CEOs invited to the Buckingham Palace in London for a Canada Club reception organized in honour of the club’s patron, the Duke of Edinburgh’s 60th anniversary. And just last year he had the opportunity to be introduced to and meet with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge who were touring British Columbia at the time.

When asked what the secret to his success is, Thind is apt to respond with, “Surround yourself with smart people, listen and weigh in on what they have to say and then take the opportunity that presents itself.”
He tells those he mentors to work hard and invest time and money into the projects they create, and to make sure to not take shortcuts. He will tell those looking to enter the real estate development market, “Make sure to work honestly, so you can be happy with the outcome. As well, don’t look for success in what others have to say.”

Perhaps his best advice of all? “Don’t take yourself too seriously.”
