Scientists warn of dangers of artificial intelligence

Darpan News Desk IANS, 12 Jan, 2015 09:54 AM
Hundreds of scientists and technologists, including Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk, have signed an open letter calling for studies into artificial intelligence (AI) to combat the dangers of the technology, a British daily reported Monday.

The letter created by the Future of Life Institute warns that “it is important to research how to reap its benefits while avoiding potential pitfalls”, The Independent reported.

It adds that “our AI systems must do what we want them to do” and lays out research objectives that will “help maximise the societal benefit of AI”.

Electric car pioneer Musk has repeatedly voiced concerns about artificial intelligence, describing it as “summoning the demon”, while physicist Hawking has warned that AI could be the end of humanity.

The document is signed by many representatives from Google and artificial intelligence companies DeepMind and Vicarious.
