Yukon Orders Tightened Regulations For Soccer Nets After Deadly Accident

The Canadian Press, 29 Apr, 2016 01:12 PM
WHITEHORSE — The Yukon government is tightening up rules for movable soccer nets.

The regulations apply to any movable soccer goal that weighs more than 18 kilograms, and they require the nets to meet the strict manufacturing standards.

That includes permanent warning labels against tipping or climbing on the nets, and specifies the goals must always be on a level surface.

If the goal is used outside, regulations require it be anchored securely to the ground, and if indoors, it must be fastened to the floor, a wall or held with weights.

The Yukon government says it is also committed to bringing all school nets up to the new standards, which take effect May 1.

The new regulations were developed after a five-year old girl was killed when a soccer net tipped over on a school field in Watson Lake in 2012.
