VANCOUVER — Switzerland exited the Women's World Cup on a classy note Sunday — with a thank you to Canada.
In the wake of the Swiss 1-0 loss to Canada in the round of 16 at B.C. Place Stadium, coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg made a point of taking the microphone at the end of her post-match news conference.
"I would really, from the bottom of my heart, thank the Canadian audience and the Canadians," the former German international said via an interpreter. "We had a lot of fun in Vancouver and in Edmonton. And we found everyone is very friendly. The welcome was fair and welcoming.
"Thank you very much. You're an amazing country. Thank you."
Voss-Tecklenburg left the room to applause from reporters.
The 19th-ranked Swiss made it to the knockout round in their first visit to the World Cup.
