    India Romp To 89 Run Win Over Pakistan In A Blockbuster Clash, Make It 7-0 Against Pakistan In World Cups

      India on Sunday beat Pakistan by 89 runs (DLS method) in their rain-interrupted 2019 ICC World Cup clash at Manchester's Old Trafford stadium.

       

      Put to bat first after Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed won the toss, India, powered by Rohit Sharma's 140 (113), set a target of 337. Pakistan, in reply, reached 166/6 in 35 overs before rain caused a temporary halt to the proceedings. On resumption, their revised target was 302 and they had to chase it down in 40 overs. Only managing to reach 212/6, they fell to their third defeat of the tournament.

       

      Pakistan were dealt an early blow in the chase when Vijay Shankar dismissed Imam-ul-Haq off his very first ball of the match. Brought on to finish the fifth over after Bhuvneshwar Kumar pulled up with a hamstring injury after bowling the fourth ball, Shankar sent in a full delivery that swung back into the left-handed Imam and hit his pads. Imam decided not to review the decision and Pakistan lost their first wicket inside the first five overs.

       
       
       
       

      Shankar is the third bowler to have taken a wicket off his very first ball in the World Cup.

       

      However, Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam temporarily steadied the ship for Pakistan with a 104-run stand for the second wicket. The pair struggled for runs early on but soon found their rhythm and pegged back the Indian pacers. The breakthrough eventually came only after Virat Kohli introduced the spinners.

       
       

      Kuldeep Yadav, bowling the 24th over, disturbed the stumps behind Babar with a tossed-up delivery that drifted away from the 24-year-old.

       

      In his next over, he got Zaman and it was all downhill for Pakistan from there.

       

      Hardik Pandya came in then and dismissed veterans Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik off consecutive balls in the 27th over. Sarfraz Ahmed then became Shankar's second wicket of the day and Imad Wasim and Shadab Khan werein the middle when rain brought a stop to the proceedings.

       
       

      With the target revised down to 302 - but in 40 overs, Pakistan now needed to score 136 runs off the last five overs. Imad and Shadab managed to take them to 212/6.

       
       

      Rohit Sharma led the charge for India with the bat. The Indian vice-captain hit his second century of the tournament and shared a 136-run opening stand with K.L. Rahul. Rahul, batting at the top of the order in place of the injured Shikhar Dhawan, scored 57 off 78 deliveries before falling to Wahab Riaz.

       

      Rohit was then ably given company by captain Virat Kohli and the pair added 98 for the second wicket. Rohit eventually fell to a loose shot off Wahab after which Kohli anchored the latter end of the innings. He was eventually dismissed when he seemingly got a faint edge to the keeper off Mohammad Amir. Although Kohli walked, umpire Marais Erasmus never raised the finger and replays showed that there was a significant gap between the bat and ball.

       
       

      Kedar Jadhav and Shankar pushed India's total to 336.

       

      This is India's third win of the tournament and they jump to third on the table, behind second-placed New Zealand on the basis of net run rate. Pakistan, who sink to the ninth place, now need to win all of their remaining matches to make it to the knockouts.

      Virat Kohli was batting at 77 during the ICC World Cup encounter between India and Pakistan on Sunday and it looked like the Indian cricket team skipper was headed towards another brilliant ODI century. However, he lashed wildly at a bouncer from Mohammad Amr in the 48th over and the Pakistan fielders all went up in appeal.

       

      The umpire was not moved by the appeals but Kohli decided to walk back as he was sure that he had nicked the ball. It is not common for batsmen to just walk against the umpire’s decision but Kohli seemed convinced.

       

      However, the replays supported the umpires’ decision and showed that there was a huge gap between bat and ball. Even Kohli was spotted watching the replays from the dressing room and MS Dhoni was also spotted swinging Kohli’s bat in the dressing room, possibly testing for any kind of noise from the handle.

       
       
       

      The match commentators were of the opinion that there was some sort of creaking noise from his bat and as a result, Kohli was convinced that he had nicked it. However, Kohli’s decision stood and that resulted in India not having a satisfactory to their innings. Pakistan made a comeback in the final few overs as India managed only 38 runs in the final five overs. Vijay Shankar (15 off 15 balls) struggled with his timing, failing to read Amir’s cutters.

       
       
       
       

      ‘Another strike on Pak’: Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh praise Kohli’s men after win

       

      Union home minister Amit Shah tweeted his praise for the men in blue for their “strike on Pakistan” as defence minister Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Piyush Goyal and minister of state (independent) for sports Kiren Rijiju joined him in lauding the Indian side. “Another strike on Pakistan by team India and the result is the same. Congratulations to the entire team for this superb performance. Every Indian is feeling proud and celebrating this impressive win,” Shah, who is also the BJP party chief, tweeted.

       
       

      Rajnath Singh said the Indian cricket team played an “amazing game”.

       

      “Congratulations to Indian cricket team for winning the match against Pakistan in #CWC2019. The Indian team played an amazing game of cricket for this victory. We are all proud of Team India.”

       
       
       

      IT'S GETTING TOUGHER AND TOUGHER, ADMITS SARFARAZ

       

      After facing a crushing 89-run defeat against arch-rivals India that was also their third loss in five games, Pakistan's proposition of making it to the semifinals of the ongoing World Cup has become tougher, skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed admits.

       

      Pakistan lost to India in their crucial World Cup tie at the Old Trafford on Sunday after the DLS method came into play in the rain-marred match.

       

      They now have just three points from five games and are languishing at the bottom of the table, just a spot above Afghanistan.

       
       

      And in order to make it to the semi-finals, the 1992 champions need to win all their remaining four fixtures and hope for favourable results in other matches as well.

       

      However, Sarfaraz is still hopeful that Pakistan can make a comeback and win all their remaining games against South Africa (June 23), New Zealand (June 26), Afghanistan (June 29) and Bangladesh (July 5).

       
       

      "It is definitely getting tougher and tougher but we have four matches and hopefully we'll win all four of them," said Sarfaraz at the post-match presentation ceremony on Sunday here in Manchester.

       

      Putting India to bat, Pakistan were not able to make use of the overcast conditions and allowed the Indian openers to score freely. Their bowlers were not up to the mark, barring Mohammed Amir, and allowed India to score a mammoth 336/5 which Pakistan failed to chase down.

       

      Rohit Sharma was the star performer for India as he scored 140 runs of 113 balls, followed by skipper Virat Kohli (77 off 65) and K.L. Rahul (57 off 78).

       
       

      "We won a good toss but unfortunately we didn't bowl in the right areas, Credit goes to Rohit, he played really well. Our plan was to pitch it up but we didn't hit the right areas. We won a good toss but we just didn't capitalize and conceded too many runs," said the Pakistan skipper.

       

      During their chase of 337, Pakistan lost their opener Imam-ul-Haq quickly. However, Fakhar Zaman (62) and Babar Azam (48) stitched together a 104-run partnership and kept them in the hunt. However, Kuldeep Yadav scalped both their wickets and dented Pakistan's chase.

       
       

      And then, Pakistan lost the wickets of Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik in quick succession and were down and out of the game.

       

      "We were going really well with the bat as well, but we lost two-three quick wickets in the middle which is when we lost the match," Sarfaraz said.

       
       
       
       
       
       
       

      KOHLI BECOMES FASTEST BATSMAN TO SCORE 11,000 ODI RUNS

       

      India skipper Virat Kohli rose to the challenge on Sunday against Pakistan and added another feather to his cap by becoming the fastest player in the history of the game to cross the 11,000-run mark in ODIs.

       

      Kohli achieved the feat in 222 innings, going past Sachin Tendulkar who took 276 knocks to go past the 11,000-run mark. Ricky Ponting reached the milestone in 286 innings, while Sourav Ganguly took 288 innings to achieve the feat.

       

      Kohli also became only the third Indian after Tendulkar and Ganguly and ninth cricketer overall to get to 11,000 ODI runs .

       

      Kohli already holds the record for being the fastest to 10,000 ODI runs.

       

      Kohli missed out on an opportunity in India's third group stage match against New Zealand in Nottingham which was called off due to rain without a single ball being bowled.

       

      On Sunday, Kohli brought up his 51st ODI half-century off 51 balls, his second fifty on the trot.

       

      When rain stopped with India on 305/4 after 46.4 overs, the India captain was unbeaten on 71 off 62 deliveries (4x6).

       

      Kohli first played second fiddle to Rohit Sharma (140) before changing gears as Hardik Pandya (26) struggled to find the middle of the bat.

      BHUVNESHWAR OUT FOR NEXT 2-3 GAMES, CONFIRMS KOHLI

       

      Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who suffered a hamstring injury against Pakistan, will be sidelined for a maximum of three games in the ongoing World Cup, skipper Virat Kohli has confirmed.

       

      Kumar injured his hamstring while bowling the fourth ball of his second over and had to walk off the field during Pakistan's chase of 337 on Sunday. Upon leaving the field, he was examined by team physio Patrick Farhart and a decision was taken to keep him off the field, with Vijay Shankar and Hardik Pandya combining to fill for him.

       

      "Bhuvi's case looks like a niggle, a case of slipping on the footmarks. It doesn't look too serious at the moment and looks like he could recover in a couple of games from now, maximum of three games," Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony after India thrashed Pakistan by 89 runs (DLS method) at the Old Trafford.

       

      The Indian skipper added that they will include Mohammad Shami who is raring to go.

       

      "He is going to be an important factor for us so hopefully he can recover in time. But we have Shami with us and it shouldn't be much of a worry for us. Even Bhuvi doesn't think his niggle is too bad and that time would heal it," he added.

       

      The injury to Bhuvneshwar comes after India lost opener Shikhar Dhawan to a hairline fracture because of which he has also been sidelined for a few games.

       

      Meanwhile, Kohli praised Rohit Sharma, who scored a brilliant 140 and helped India post 336/5 in their full quota of 50 overs. "Rohit's knock was outstanding today. He again showed today why he is such a good ODI player."

       

      He was also full of praise for left-arm chinaman Kuldeep Yadav, who picked up two wickets of set Pakistani batters Babar Azam (48) and Fakhar Zaman (62) and confirmed India's seventh victory over Pakistan in World Cups.

       

      "Kuldeep Yadav was brilliant. Those guys were only trying to play him out. A longer spell helped in that situation and he was getting into rhythm. They were thinking that he would go out of the attack sooner rather than later," said Kohli.

       

      "That ball to dismiss Babar was just outstanding with the drift, the turn and just beating the batsman batting so well. This is the best he has been bowling since coming to England and, him confident with Chahal, is going to be an important factor for us in the tournament," he added.

       

      Asked why India-Pakistan games have not lived up to hype in the recent times, the Indian skipper said, "I think they outplayed us in the Champions Trophy 2017 final. But if you focus on this game as too emotional, things can go wrong. We never approach them (the India-Pakistan game) from that perspective. We are professional about it and the result is what that matters."

       

      India, standing pretty at the third spot with seven points from four games, will next face Afghanistan on June 22 in Southampton.
