It is a proud moment for Indians and Canadians 26-year-old Amarveer Singh Dhesi has won a gold medal in the 125 Kg wrestling at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. 

He defeated his opponent Pakistan’s Zaman Anwar 9-2. 

He hails from Surrey, BC, Canada, and his father Balbir Dhesi is also an accomplished freestyle wrestler who also trained in Greco-Roman circuit in India.

Amarveer Dhesi took up wrestling in his youth. Amarveer Dhesi started competing in each freestyle apart from Greco Roman. He also ended up becoming known as the Surrey and nationwide champion in each of his junior classes. In 2013, he were given a full-time scholarship to Oregon State College and came in 5th within the NCAA Championships.

Dhesi also won a silver medal for planet junior wrestling championships in Zagreb in 2014. 

Even though he suffered a kneee injury he kept going. Dhesi gained his spot within Canada at the 2020 Pan American Olympic Qualification event and reached the overall ranking placing himself in the 125 kg class for the Tokyo Olympics.

His parents Balbir Dhesi and Gurbax Kaur hope to throw him a big celebration for his win once he arrives back to his hometown Surrey.
