Young Delhi Woman Stabbed 22 Times By Jiilted Lover' On Busy Street, No One Helped

Darpan News Desk IANS, 20 Sep, 2016 12:17 PM
A 21-year-old teacher was on Tuesday morning fatally stabbed as many as 22 times by her "jilted" lover, police said. The Ministry of Home Affairs has asked police to submit a report on the incident, which comes a day after another woman was stabbed to death in broad daylight.

Karuna, of Burari area in north Delhi, was a teacher at Novel Reaches School, the police said.

"She was stabbed in Burari area at 9 a.m. by accused Surender Singh, 34, who was known to her. No one came to her rescue," Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma told reporters.

She was going to school when she was attacked, police said.

Karuna was declared brought dead at a trauma centre near ISBT (Inter-State Bus Terminus).

"There were 22 stab wounds on her body," the police officer added.

The attacker, the son of a retired sub-inspector of Delhi Police, was beaten up by the public and was admitted at the Aruna Asaf Ali hospital.

The DCP said Surender Singh had been harassing the young woman for a year or so. Her family had lodged a complaint four-five months ago but both families had arrived at a compromise.

"No FIR was filed against the accused with the police," a senior police officer told IANS.

Explaining the crime motive, Verma said: "Surender claimed he was having an affair with Karuna and said he was angry after he saw today (Tuesday) some pictures she sent to another man."

According to the police, Surender's divorce case was going on. The woman was a student at his computer coaching centre.

"The crime weapon has been seized and a case registered on the statement of the dead woman's cousin, who is an eyewitness," the officer added.

Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, said he has asked Delhi Police to submit a factual report on the incident.

"This is a brutal case, have asked the Delhi Police commissioner to submit a factual report in the case," Rijiju told reporters here.

After news of the attack spread, the woman's relatives and other family members protested outside the hospital and also blocked traffic.

The stabbing comes a day after a 28-year old woman, Laxmi, a mother of two, was fatally stabbed by a stalker in west Delhi's Inderpuri area. He had been harassing her for six years.

In July last year, a 19-year old Class 11 student, Meenakshi, was brutally stabbed in full public view in central Delhi's Anand Parbat area. Meenakshi was attacked as she and her family had lodged a police complaint for eve teasing against the accused Jai Parkash.
