Woman Who Attacked Nurse At Kamloops Psychiatric Centre To Undergo Assessment

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 23 Apr, 2015 10:24 AM
KAMLOOPS, B.C. — A woman accused of repeatedly attacking staff members at a psychiatric facility in Kamloops, B.C., will undergo assessment to determine whether she's fit to stand trial.

Heather Harris is facing two separate assault charges stemming from incidents at Hillside Psychiatric Centre earlier this month.

A judge ordered Wednesday that she be sent to Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Coquitlam for a fitness assessment.

The court heard Harris spends almost all of her time in a confinement cell, and that she has been in altercations with staff at the hospital when she has been released from her cell.

She allegedly punched a nurse in the head when she was let out of the cell on April 15, and lashed out physically against staff during another outing on April 2.

Harris was previously charged after two other assaults at the same facility in 2013, and those charges were stayed after doctors found her unfit to stand trial.

If Harris is found unfit to stand trial, her file will be sent to the B.C. Review Board for disposition. She’s due back in court on May 21. (Kamloops This Week)
