A woman is dead and a man and two-year-old child were injured in a stabbing Tuesday night in Surrey, B.C.

The woman was still alive when police arrived and the man and toddler were seriously hurt.

All three were rushed to hospital where the woman was pronounced dead, but police say the other two were recovering.

The suspect was located near the home.

The statement says the case was being investigated as a homicide and aggravated assault stemming from family violence.

Cpl. Elenore Sturko with the Surrey RCMP said anytime a child is involved in violence like this it is heartbreaking.

There is something that brings it home when we see family violence and when there are children involved,” she said. “This is very hurtful to police and the community and people waking up to this news are impacted by what’s happened.”

Sturko added a lot of work has been done over recent years to try and remove the stigma around reporting family and domestic violence to police.

All are members of the same family. IHIT has taken over the investigation.
