Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman Says An Inquiry Into Police Project Still A Possibility

    Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman says a full-scale public inquiry into the police headquarters project at City Hall is still a possibility.
     
    Bowman says he wants to let the RCMP finish their investigation and depending on the results, all options including an inquiry are on the table.
     
    Bowman calls the allegations involving former mayor Sam Katz “deeply troubling” but cautions no one has been charged and nothing has been proven in court.
     
    Newly unsealed RCMP documents have alleged the owner of Caspian Construction, the  company that built Winnipeg's new police headquarters, wrote cheques to Katz.
     
    Mounties also allege Caspian forged, inflated and manipulated invoices for work on the headquarters — a project that's more than $75 million over budget.
     
    Katz has said the cheques had nothing to do with the police headquarters project while the owner of Caspian Construction, Armik Babakhanians, has said he strongly disputes all allegations.
     
    “What we need to do right now is let the RCMP do their important work," Bowman said Tuesday. "These are very serious allegations. We want to do our part to ensure that there is value for money sent here to City Hall and to ensure that there is accountability.”
