Winnipeg baby left in cold in recycling bin; teen charged: police

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 02 Jan, 2015 11:16 AM

WINNIPEG — A Winnipeg teenager has been charged after police say a 19-month-old girl was found in a dumpster in freezing weather.

Police say officers responded to a call at about 6:30 a.m. on Thursday and found the baby in an outdoor recycling bin with life-threatening injuries.

They say the little girl had been outside for several minutes before being discovered.

She was transported to hospital and is now listed in stable condition.

Police say the incident started when a fight broke out at a house party, and one person took the child and ran from the home without dressing her for the cold winter weather.

They allege the suspect then tripped, fell on the young girl and placed her in a recycling bin before returning to the home and getting into a fight with a 13-year-old female.

A second male was chased from the home during the altercation and heard the child crying and called police.

Police say the baby, the 13-year-old girl and the accused were related but would not provide further details.

A 17-year-old boy faces charges including criminal negligence causing bodily harm, abandoning a child, possession or consumption of liquor by a minor and assault.
