Wildfire East Of Lillooet, B.C., Prompts Evacuation Alert For Two Homes

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 29 May, 2017 11:58 AM
LILLOOET, B.C. — Two homes east of Lillooet, B.C., have been placed on evacuation alert as a wildfire burns nearby.

The blaze was spotted Sunday and the BC Wildfire Service says it quickly scorched nine hectares of bush about eight kilometres east of Lillooet on the east side of the Fraser River.

Fire information officer Erin Catherall says flames are uncontained and are burning vigorously on the ground and in the crowns of some trees.

She says a five-member crew was assigned Sunday, backed by an air tanker, helicopters and the local First Nations fire department, while additional crews and equipment have been deployed.

A cause of the fire has not been determined.

Temperatures around Lillooet are expected to reach 34 degrees, which Catherall says raises the fire risk, and Environment Canada is not forecasting showers for the region until at least Wednesday.
