Western University Apologizes To Victims Of Psychiatrist Who Worked At School

The Canadian Press, 14 Mar, 2016 11:13 AM
LONDON, Ont. — An Ontario university has issued an apology today for the part it may have played in "trauma and hurt" suffered by former students abused by a psychiatrist who was once employed at the school.

Western University's apology concerned London, Ont., psychiatrist Dr. Stanley Dobrowolski.

Dobrowolski is serving a four-year sentence for sexual assault and voyeurism stemming from incidents that happened after 1995 and involved his private practice.

He worked at Western University's Student Health Services between 1985 and 1994 — a period during which the university says concerns were raised about his "inappropriate actions" with some of the female students he was treating.

Western president Amit Chakma says the university apologizes for the trauma and pain Dobrowolski's victims endured as a result of the psychiatrist's conduct while at the university.

Chakma says the university also wants to apologizes to any staff who were affected by Dobrowolski's behaviour.

Western says it continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Dobrowolski's time at the university.
