  • Voters head to polls to fill vacancy in byelection in Lethbridge, Alta.

Voters head to the polls today to pick a new legislature representative in Lethbridge-West.

The legislature seat was left vacant after NDP MLA Shannon Phillips resigned July 1.

Early numbers from Elections Alberta show 18 per cent of the 37,000 eligible voters have cast advance votes, down from 28 per cent in the 2023 general election.

Three candidates are vying for the seat: the NDP's Rob Miyashiro, the United Conservatives' John Middleton-Hope and the Alberta Party's Layton Veverka.

The UCP has 49 seats in the 87-seat legislature compared with 37 for the NDP.

The riding has been held by the New Democrats since 2015, and the byelection will be the first test of the party's appeal under new leader Naheed Nenshi.

Eby wants all-party probe into B.C. vote count errors as election boss blames weather
Premier David Eby is proposing an all-party committee investigate mistakes made during the British Columbia election vote tally, including an uncounted ballot box and unreported votes in three-quarters of the province's 93 ridings. The proposal comes after B.C.'s chief electoral officer blamed extreme weather, long working hours and a new voting system for human errors behind the mistakes in last month's count, though none were large enough to change the initial results.
