Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 07 Jan, 2016 01:01 PM
NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. — Owners of newer model Volkswagen sedans are being warned about a spike in thieves targeting VW's in New Westminster, B.C.

Acting Sgt. Jeff Scott says the cars aren't taken, but their catalytic converters are stolen.

All the targeted vehicles were parked overnight on side streets around McBride Blvd.

Catalytic converters are emission-control devices that attach to a car's exhaust system

Scott says they are targeted by metal thieves because they contain metals that can fetch a small amount of cash from scrap metal dealers.

He's urging drivers to report all such thefts, always park in secured lots and be suspicious of anyone loitering around parked vehicles.
