Violence Erupts During Montreal Protest

The Canadian Press, 07 Apr, 2016 12:00 PM
MONTREAL — A demonstration to denounce police brutality in Montreal turned violent on Wednesday night.

The event, in the city's north end, began peacefully, but erupted in violence as it was ending as some protesters split off from the main group and began targeting shops and vehicles.

Police say several vehicles were torched and the windows of a half-dozen stores and a police station were smashed.

The fires had all been contained before midnight.

There was no word of any injuries or arrests.

Montreal police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere says those behind the violence may not have had any connection to the event.
