Vancouver-Based Special Effects Artist, Katie Chappell, Killed By Lion In South Africa

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 03 Jun, 2015 01:17 PM
VANCOUVER — A woman who was killed by a lion in South Africa has been identified on social media as Kate Chappell, a 29-year-old visual effects editor who lived in Vancouver.

Chappell worked on blockbusters including "Godzilla," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "Divergent," and contributed to a 2014 "Game of Thrones" episode that won an Emmy.

A Facebook post attributed to Chappell's family describes her as a brilliant, kind, adventurous and high-spirited woman, whose energy and passion could not be bound by continents or oceans.

The post says Chappell was on a volunteer mission to protect wildlife in South Africa when she was involved in the tragic and fatal accident.

A South Africa park official told The Associated Press the woman was attacked through an open car window as she took photos and the driver was also injured.

The Facebook post says a wake will be held Friday in Chappell's hometown of Rye, N.Y.
