Vancouver Aquarium rescues 100th seal pup this year in North Vancouver

The Canadian Press , 12 Aug, 2014 08:54 PM
NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C. - The Vancouver Aquarium has rescued its 100th seal pup this year.

Boaters found the male pup near Mosquito Creek Marina in North Vancouver on Aug. 6. and thought he looked distressed.

Steve Davis and Mark James saw the newborn on a derelict float they were about to throw into a garbage bag and called the Vancouver

    Aquarium for help.

The aquarium retrieved the pup and like all seal pups in its rescue centre, he was named after an element of the periodic table, in this case,

Praseodymium — or PR for short.

PR is being fed a nutrient-rich formula five times a day to help him gain weight, and if rehabilitation goes well, he will be released in this fall.

In a typical summer the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre admits anywhere from 100 to 150 seals with an all-time record of

    174 seals in 2005.
