Unsuccessful B.C. NDP Candidate Matt Toner Seeks Green Nomination In Vancouver Riding

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 07 Apr, 2015 12:34 PM
VICTORIA — A failed New Democrat candidate says he will be seeking the Green party's nomination in a Vancouver byelection, whenever it is called.

Matt Toner ran for the NDP in the 2013 provincial election in the riding of Vancouver-False Creek but lost to Liberal Sam Sullivan.

A byelection in Vancouver-Mount Pleasant could be held within the next year following longtime New Democrat Jenny Kwan's bid to run for a federal riding.

Toner says he became disenchanted with the NDP's lacklustre rebuilding efforts after it lost the 2013 election, prompting him to consider other political options, including the Liberals and municipal politics.

The high-tech industry entrepreneur and former naval officer says he is seeking a Green nomination in Vancouver because of the party's policies on environmental stewardship and economic sustainability.

Toner says the NDP has solid grassroots supporters but the party has 1960s ideas and is run like it's still in the 1990s.
