University Of Toronto Ramps Up Security After Online Threats Against Women

The Canadian Press, 11 Sep, 2015 12:33 PM
TORONTO — The University of Toronto says it has ramped up security at all three of its campuses following online threats targeting the school.

The university's provost issued a warning to students, faculty and staff Thursday, citing threats made on a blog, but did not describe the nature of the threats.

But the union representing contract teachers at the university says the threats focus on women and feminists at the school and "specifically encourage violence."

The Canadian Union of Public Employees local 3902 urges its members — particularly those identifying as women or working in Women's Studies and Sociology — to be "aware and careful" and says they don't have to work if they feel unsafe.

Neither the union nor the university have specified where the threats were made but an image of a post on the website BlogTO was circulated on social media.

A screen capture of comments on the site shows a message by someone using the name "Kill Feminists."

"Next week when a feminist at the University of Toronto tries to ruin your life with false sex rape allegations, rent a gun from a gang and start firing bullets into these feminists at your nearest Women's Studies classroom," it reads.
