Two Vancouver police officers charged with assault after alleged off-duty incident

  • Two Vancouver police officers charged with assault after alleged off-duty incident

Two Vancouver police officers have been charged with assault related to an off-duty incident last December.

Court records show Brian Hunt and Joshua Wong each face one count of assault over an offence alleged to have occurred on Dec. 16, 2023, in Vancouver.

Vancouver police spokeswoman Const. Tania Visintin didn't offer specifics about what led to the charges, but says in a statement that the department immediately notified the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner after being made aware of the incident.

Visintin says the New Westminster Police Department conducted a criminal investigation and provincial prosecutors approved the charges on Tuesday.

Wong was among several officers previously involved in the violent takedown that ended in the death of 33-year-old Myles Gray in 2015.

He was never changed but testified at an inquest that he was told not to make handwritten notes about the confrontation.

Visintin says neither officer is currently serving in an "operational role."

New bill would let Canadians to pass citizenship rights down to children born abroad
A new government bill tabled in the House of Commons on Thursday would allow Canadians to pass citizenship rights down to their children born outside the country — a move that would add an unknown number of new citizens. In 2009, former Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper's government changed the law so that Canadian parents who were born abroad could not pass down their citizenship, unless their child was born in Canada.
