Two dead in northern B.C. First Nation, suspect hurt after standoff with police

Two people are dead after a reported shooting in a northern B.C. First Nation.

Mounties in the community of Tsay Keh Dene, roughly 360 kilometres north of Prince George, responded to a call late Tuesday about shots fired in a residence and injuries to multiple people.

Police say a man armed with a gun fled into a nearby home as officers arrived at the scene.

They say negotiations began just after midnight on Wednesday, and after more than five hours of efforts, the talks "deteriorated," leading to the deployment of a "chemical irritant" into the residence.

RCMP say the man reportedly left the house with a weapon and police shot at him with a so-called "extended-range impact munition" and their firearms.

They say two people were found dead in the original home while the man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is investigating police actions in the incident.

The report makes more than two dozen recommendations, nine of them focused on raising family incomes through paying family-supporting wages or improving income supports. It says B.C.'s child poverty rate of 14.3 per cent was lower than the national average of 15.6 per cent, but the rate on 67 First Nations reserves is about double the national rate, while for single-parent families it's even higher at 40 per cent.

Upon arrival, officers located a 40 year female and a 35 year old male, both suffering from stab wounds. Both individuals were transported to a local area hospital where the female is listed in critical condition, while the male is currently stable.

RCMP investigate shooting that killed one man in Sicamous

Police in British Columbia's Interior are asking for the public's help to identify a suspect vehicle after a man was fatally shot this weekend. A statement from the B.C. RCMP says the detachment in Sicamous, east of Kamloops, received a report of a shooting in the parking lot of the Best Western Hotel along the Trans-Canada Highway at about 4:50 p.m. on Saturday.
