Turtles vs. turbines: Ontario's top court deciding on nine-turbine project

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 08 Dec, 2014 10:58 AM

TORONTO — A legal battle pitting turtles against wind turbines is being heard in a packed Ontario courtroom.

At issue is a proposed nine-turbine wind farm on Crown land on the shore of Lake Ontario.

The province's environmental review tribunal ruled the project would jeopardize the area's threatened Blanding's turtle.

The project proponent, Gilead Power, successfully challenged that decision in Divisional Court earlier this year.

Naturalists argue the wind farm at Ostrander Point in Prince Edward County, south of Belleville, will cause havoc to the turtles.

After the two-day hearing, Ontario's top court will have to decide whether the turbines can be put up.
