Tunnel under Stanley Park coming

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 05 Nov, 2024 06:17 PM
  • Tunnel under Stanley Park coming

The Metro Vancouver regional district says construction will begin this month on a new 1.4-kilometre-long water supply tunnel deep under Stanley Park.

A statement from the district says the tunnel will replace a water main that was built in the 1930s with work expected to stretch into 2029.

It says the work will involve the construction of three vertical shafts in the park at locations selected based on what the district calls rigorous geotechnical, environmental, archaeological, technological, and traffic studies.

Metro Vancouver board chair Mike Hurley says the work is important for the region's drinking water, ensuring the system can better withstand strong earthquakes while accommodating population growth.
