Trudeau Wants To Engage On Trade, Investment And Human Rights With China

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 26 Aug, 2016 01:12 PM
SAGUENAY, Que. — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he wants to "reset" Canada's relationship with China.

Trudeau says he wants to be able to discuss access to the growing middle-class market for Canadian goods and services in China, all the while pushing its leadership to do better on human rights, democracy and governance.

Trudeau — speaking in Saguenay, Que., after wrapping up a two-day Liberal caucus retreat — says the previous Conservative government went from "hot to cold" on certain files involving China.

Trudeau is heading to China for an official visit next week and a senior government official has confirmed he intends to discuss canola exports, a looming trade irritant.

Trudeau says the whole point of Canada engaging with the world is to create opportunities for Canadians and improve the lives of people all over the globe.

That is why he says any talk of foreign investment or economic trade must focus on creating jobs here in Canada, growing the economy and ensuring our goods have access to foreign markets.
