Trudeau Uses G20 To Raise Cases Of Canadians Detained In Turkey, Indonesia

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 05 Sep, 2016 11:25 AM
  • Trudeau Uses G20 To Raise Cases Of Canadians Detained In Turkey, Indonesia
HANGZHOU, China — The prime minister says he has spoken with Turkish and Indonesian leaders about the fate of three Canadians detained in those countries.

Justin Trudeau says he raised their cases on the sidelines of the G20 summit in China, though he didn't say what he heard in return.

Turkey detained two Turkish-Canadian men following the failed coup attempt there in July, accusing them of links to the ringleaders of the plot.

In Indonesia, a Canadian teacher is now in prison after being convicted of crimes against children he insists he never carried out.

Trudeau says as a person who has travelled extensively, he knows how important it is to have a government that is concerned about the welfare of its citizens abroad.

He says that's why he always brings up consular issues in discussions with his fellow world leaders.

"It is important for me to demonstrate that Canada cares deeply about its citizens in difficulties abroad and we need to make sure they are getting proper consular access and the kind of support through rule of law that is expected," Trudeau said Monday.
