Trial Hears Man Shot At Least Nine Times By Manitoba RCMP Officer

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 19 Jun, 2019 08:42 PM

THOMPSON, Man. — The manslaughter trial of an RCMP officer in northern Manitoba heard a man was shot at least nine times by the constable.

Const. Abram Letkeman is on trial for the 2015 death of Steven Campbell, who was behind the wheel of a Jeep that the officer had tried to pull over for erratic driving.

At the time of the shooting, police said the Jeep came to a stop after a brief chase and when Letkeman approached the vehicle, it suddenly accelerated and hit the officer, prompting him to fire.

Forensic pathologist John Younes described to court the multiple bullet wounds Campbell suffered, including one on his jaw and another in his shoulder.

Younes testified that because of the injuries and the type of glass found on Campbell's body it is likely the bullets came through the driver's window.

When questioned by defence, the pathologist said some of the bullets could have also come from other angles.
