Toronto Transit Driver Dhanbir Shergill Charged In Death Of 14-year-old Girl

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 20 Mar, 2015 01:14 PM

TORONTO — A Toronto Transit Commission driver has been charged in connection with an accident last December that killed a 14-year-old girl.

Amaria Diljohn died when she was hit by a bus on Dec. 19 in the city's east end (at Neilson Rd. and Finch Ave. East).

Police say 28-year-old Dhanbir Shergill of Bowmanville, Ont., is charged with dangerous driving causing death and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

He is scheduled to appear in court later today.

Police said the girl was crossing a street when she was struck by a bus and died at the scene.

Days after the incident, the TTC said it would speed up a review of bus and streetcar operator recruitment, training and recertification.

Commission CEO Andy Byford said the death of Diljohn had "shaken" his organization and assured the public that safety is the TTC's top priority.
