Toronto Mayor Meets With Olympic Committee As City Weighs Bid For 2024 Games

IANS, 12 Aug, 2015 11:59 AM
Toronto's mayor is one step closer to deciding whether the city will bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics.

A spokeswoman for John Tory says the mayor met with the head of the Canadian Olympic Committee on Tuesday to discuss recent changes in the bid process and learn more about the city's two previous attempts.

She says the meeting was "part of the consultation and due diligence the mayor committed to undertake" before ruling on the possibility of a bid.

Cities looking to host the 2024 Games have until Sept. 15 to formally express their interest to the International Olympic Committee.

Tory has said he wants to carefully weigh the pros and cons before making a decision, and that won't happen until after the Parapan Am Games, which wrap Saturday.

The Canadian Olympic Committee, however, is pushing for Toronto to make a pitch, saying last month's Pan Am Games proved the city can handle a major multi-sport competition.

Toronto unsuccessfully bid for the 1996 and 2008 Olympics.
