Toronto FC Calls Sexually Explicit Fan Sign A 'Disgraceful Act'

The Canadian Press, 29 Aug, 2016 12:04 PM
Toronto FC says a sexual explicit sign posted by fans at BMO Field during the team's 1-0 loss to the Montreal Impact on Saturday is "an embarrassment" to the club and its supporters.

The Major League Soccer club issued a statement Monday on its Twitter account apologizing for the sign and asked for fan assistance in identifying those responsible.

"Toronto FC is proud to have one of the best fan bases and stadium environments in our sport," the statement said. "Our fans show tremendous support for the club while demonstrating proper respects for our opponents and their fans.

"On Saturday night, however, a sign was displayed in the stands that was insulting to many including our opponent, the city of Montreal and their fans. It was an embarrassment to our club and our supporters and will not be tolerated."

The sign, which was displayed in the stands, depicted a woman in Impact blue and a man in TFC red involved in a sex act.

TFC apologized to the Impact, the city and Montreal fans for the "disgraceful act."

"We are currently investigating through all available security and social media footage and strongly encourage fans with any information to assists us in identifying those involved so that they can be held responsible," TFC said.

Toronto FC also apologized to its Twitter followers shortly afterwards and added it was looking into the matter.
