Toddler East Of Toronto Dies After Swallowing Pill At Relatives' Home: Police

The Canadian Press, 07 Dec, 2016 11:03 AM
WHITBY, Ont. — Police are warning people to lock up their medication following the death of a toddler east of Toronto.

The incident took place on Nov. 19 after a Whitby, Ont., family visited relatives.

Police say a 13-month-old boy went into a bedroom and swallowed a single pill he found in the unlocked room. They did not specify the drug.

They say the child had stopped breathing, and he died in hospital two days later following an accidental overdose. Details of the incident were released late Tuesday.

Police say the family asked them to warn others about the dangers of unsecured medication in order to prevent similar deaths.

Officers say it's especially important during the holiday season, when families may visit loved ones who aren't used to having children around.
