  • 'The Interview' to open in 27 Canadian theatres on Friday, Sony says

TORONTO — After Americans had a chance to see "The Interview" in theatres, Canadians in some locations will also be able to watch the controversial movie on the big screen starting Friday.

Sony Pictures says the film will open in 27 theatres in various parts of the country, from Salmon Arm, B.C., to Calgary, Saskatoon, Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal.

Sony had cancelled plans to show the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy depicting the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Major theatres dropped plans to show the movie thanks to threats from hackers.

But it started playing in some independent theatres in the United States after a wave of criticism over the decision, including from U.S. President Barack Obama, and Sony also released the movie online.

Other Canadian communities that will be showing the movie include Williams Lake, Vernon and Surrey in B.C., Red Deer and Peace River in Alberta, Portage la Prairie, Man., Windsor, Ont., and Campbellton, N.B.
