Tanker Truck Gas Spill Forces Closure Of School, Office In Coldstream, B.C.

The Canadian Press, 26 Nov, 2015 01:50 PM
COLDSTREAM , B.C. — Officials in the municipality of Coldstream, B.C., estimate that about 6,000 litres of gasoline spilled when a tanker truck overfilled a holding tank at a Centax gas station.

What caused the spill in the Okanagan community early on Wednesday remains under investigation and the driver of the truck has been interviewed.

Rick Wagner from the B.C. Ministry of Environment says the spill could take a week to clean up, but all of the gas was contained to the station site and to a small curb area on the nearby road.

Gasoline fumes forced the closure of the nearby Coldstream Elementary School and the Coldstream District office on Wednesday.

Wagner says charges could be laid against the tanker company depending on what the investigation finds.

A news release from the district says both the school and the district office are expected to reopen on Thursday.
