Suspect In Fatal Montreal Carjacking Under Arrest And Being Questioned

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 05 Dec, 2016 01:47 PM
MONTREAL — A 21-year-old suspect in an overnight carjacking and double shooting that left a woman dead in Montreal is being questioned by investigators, police said Monday.

The victim, 49, was shot late Sunday night in a gas station parking lot in the Pointe-aux-Trembles neighbourhood in the eastern part of the city.

Montreal police spokesman Raphael Bergeron said witnesses saw the suspect flee in the woman's car.

"Police officers found her and she was transported quickly to hospital where she unfortunately died later on overnight," Bergeron said.

Not long after the shooting, the woman's vehicle was involved in an accident and was ditched, police said.

Authorities then received a 911 call from a man claiming a gun-wielding individual was at his door demanding his car keys.

The suspect shot through the door and police said the man suffered non-life threatening injuries.

After allegedly stealing the second vehicle, the suspect led officers on a lengthy chase that ended up south of Montreal.

The vehicle was found in a ditch near a shopping mall at the intersection of two major highways in Brossard.

The suspect was apprehended by Longueuil police in a parking lot after a short pursuit on foot.

Bergeron said he was taken to a police detention centre while investigators combed through multiple crime scenes Monday.

Earlier on Sunday evening, police found the body of a 20-year-old man at an apartment in east-end Montreal.

Bergeron said police are still trying to determine the circumstances surrounding his death and whether the suspect is somehow connected with that incident.
