Surrey Woman Dies After Scuba Diving Accident Near West Vancouver

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 11 Oct, 2016 09:59 AM
VANCOUVER — Police say a woman is dead after a diving accident near a park in West Vancouver, B.C.

The West Vancouver Police Department says crews were called to Whytecliff Park around noon Sunday after a diver was brought to shore in medical distress.

They say the woman signalled to her diving partners that she was in trouble, but investigators are still looking into the nature of the emergency.

The two good Samaritans performed CPR for over five minutes before emergency crews arrived and worked to resuscitate her for another 30 minutes. She was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.

West Vancouver Police say the deceased was a diving student in a multi-day scuba class and was not experienced.

"The diver indicated to fellow divers some difficulty at depth — approximately 40 metres below surface," said Const. Jeff Palmer. "At some point this person was clearly in a medical emergency and was brought to shore."

Police have not released the woman's name, but say she is from Surrey, B.C.

The BC Coroners Service has taken the woman's diving equipment and is investigating with police.
