Surrey Steps Up Celebrates Positive Youth-Driven Initiatives In Surrey

Darpan News Desk, 10 Mar, 2020 07:45 PM

Hundreds of youth filled City Hall on Friday evening to showcase and celebrate the positive contributions that young people are making in Surrey.

Initially created as a follow-up event to an anti-bullying contest in 2014, Surrey Steps Up has gained continued popularity, with this year’s event highlighting over 25 community projects.

“Every day I see the positive impact that youth are having on our community, and it goes without saying that the growing success of Surrey Steps Up boils down to the tremendous efforts of the youth themselves,” said Mayor Doug McCallum.

“It is always inspiring to hear from the next generation of leaders and celebrate the positive contributions they are making in their schools and community. Surrey has endless opportunities for youth, and this event is a great way of encouraging more young people to see what is possible when you step up and play a positive role within the community.”

Surrey Steps Up is driven by Surrey’s Youth Planning Team, with the support of the City of Surrey, Surrey RCMP and the Surrey School District.

Highlights at this year’s event included over 25 youth-driven community projects, celebrating everything from good deeds to creative art and performances. The event also included a dance jam, Tik Tok dance challenge, interactive activities, a sensory-friendly zone and prizes.
