Surrey Police Officer, Municipal Employee Charged For Mishandling Of Exhibits And Theft

Darpan News Desk, 27 Jan, 2017 01:10 PM
A Surrey RCMP member and City of Surrey Municipal employee have been charged following an investigation into allegations of mishandling of exhibits and theft.

In October 2015 the Surrey RCMP were notified of possible criminal activity associated to a firearm that was a police exhibit. An investigation was launched to determine the circumstances and confirm the actions of the individuals involved. The findings of a comprehensive investigation were forwarded to Crown Counsel for their assessment of criminal charges.

Cst. Chris Rerup has since been charged with breach of trust and theft of a firearm while David Jones was charged with possession of a restricted firearm without a licence and theft of a firearm.

"Allegations of this nature are serious, have potential for a loss of public trust and are not in keeping with our expectations, policies and procedures, " says C/Supt. Dwayne McDonald, Officer in Charge of the Surrey RCMP Detachment.

Cst. Rerup appeared in Surrey Provincial Court on January 26, 2017. In addition to this criminal investigation, Cst. Rerup is also facing an RCMP internal Code of Conduct investigation. Cst. Rerup is currently suspended with pay and his duty status will be subject to ongoing reviews.

In addition to the criminal investigation, Mr. Jones’ RCMP security clearance has been pulled, and he is not an active employee.

Both are scheduled to make their next court appearance on February 3, 2017.
