Surrey man arrested in carjacking

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 08 Jul, 2024 03:22 PM
  • Surrey man arrested in carjacking

A 33-year-old man from Surrey has been arrested and charged with several offences after he allegedly stole a woman's vehicle, crashed, then stole a five-tonne truck and crashed again into a row of parked vehicles.

R-C-M-P say a woman called Friday afternoon to report that a man had assaulted her and taken her vehicle, which was then involved in a three-vehicle crash.

The man ran away from that scene, but police say they received multiple 9-1-1 calls about a five-tonne truck being driven in an erratic manner.

The Mounties say an officer used his patrol car to intercept the truck, disabling it, and the suspect faces charges including two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, one count of assault, and one count of dangerous driving.

The Bank of Canada will be in no rush to cut interest rates after Statistics Canada reported a larger-than-expected employment gain last month, economists say. The federal agency's labour force survey released Friday said the economy added 37,000 jobs in January after several months of relatively no change in employment. Canada’s unemployment rate fell to 5.7 per cent last month, marking the first decline since December 2022.
