Surrey Fire Service Honours Citizen For Rescue Efforts

Darpan, 04 Jun, 2015 12:48 PM
Surrey – The Surrey Fire Service will be awarding a commendation to Yvonne Bernardy-Dearden for her quick action and courage in helping to save a sleeping couple from a house fire in the 17000 block of 0 Ave. in Surrey.

Just before 6am on May 25th, Ms. Bernardy-Dearden was on her way home from work when she spotted flames coming from the home.

The fire was burning in the attic space of the home and as a result the smoke alarm was not activated. When fire crews arrived the house was fully engulfed and was upgraded to a second alarm. Ms. Bernardy-Dearden’s rapid response ensured the couple escaped safely and prevented the possibility of a tragic outcome.

The Surrey Fire Service will be recognizing Ms. Bernardy-Dearden for her notable actions in alerting the couple and potentially saving their lives by presenting her with a commendation. In attendance at the ceremony will be homeowner, Andy Johnston and Surrey Fire Chief, Len Garis.
