Surrey councillor says to move past back and forth on Surrey police transition

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 11 Sep, 2023 01:29 PM
  • Surrey councillor says to move past back and forth on Surrey police transition

A Surrey councillor says it's time the city's mayor and supporters "get past" their opposition to the Surrey Police Service and lead Surrey and its police board toward a transition away from the R-C-M-P.

Mayor Brenda Locke opposes the switch to a municipal force but councillor Linda Annis says "that ship has sailed," and urges Locke to work quickly on the hand over.

Annis says the latest report -- to be considered by council today -- shows a lack of "political enthusiasm or leadership," slowing the transition and costing Surrey an extra 266-thousand dollars every day as the city pays for both the R-C-M-P and the S-P-S, which will replace the Mounties.

Annis says Locke has to make the switch to municipal policing Surrey's "Number 1 priority."
