Surrey Council approves contract to build new Strawberry Hill Community Hall

Darpan News Desk City of Surrey, 25 Jul, 2023 02:28 PM
  • Surrey Council approves contract to build new Strawberry Hill Community Hall

Surrey, BC – During the Regular Council Meeting on Monday, Surrey Council voted in favour of a $2.53M contract to build a new Strawberry Hill Community Hall. In 2021, a fire destroyed the historic Strawberry Hill Hall that was currently under construction as part of a $1.2M rehabilitation project that would have seen areas built for childcare and community rentals. Built in 1909, it was among the oldest community halls in Surrey.

“I’m happy to see this beloved community facility being rebuilt,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. “Losing this building was disappointing to so many people. While we can never get the original back, I’m pleased we can offer a new space to the Newton community to enjoy for decades to come. I thank staff for their work in moving this project forward and I look forward to the beginning of construction.”

The $2.53M contract that Surrey Council has approved was awarded to Jacob Bos Construction Inc. The work consists of the following:

  • Construction of the new wood frame building, utilizing existing concrete foundations;
  • Construction of new decks, stairs, ramps, and canopies;
  • Fit out and finishing of all interior spaces of the new facility;
  • New Landscaping and related site improvements including pathways, site furnishings and a new parking lot; and
  • All commissioning, start‐up, and training for operating the new facility.

Funding for the project is available in the approved 2023 Capital Budget.
