Suminder Grewal’s Death: Two Men Charged With First Degree Murder In Surrey Fatal Shooting

Darpan News Desk, 06 Aug, 2019 08:10 PM

Surrey: Two men have been charged with first degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Suminder Grewal in Surrey, B.C.

On August 2, 2019 at about 9:20 a.m., 43-year-old Surrey resident Suminder Grewal was shot and killed in the 3000-block of 152 Street in Surrey and a suspect vehicle was seen speeding away from the scene.

Acting on information from the public, police found the suspect vehicle a short time later and arrested two men in relation to the homicide. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called in to take over the investigation.

IHIT and its partners have been working continuously since yesterday’s deployment and have forwarded their findings so far in the investigation for charge approval consideration to the B.C. Prosecution Service.

On August 3, 2019, 20-year-old Calvin Powery-Hooker and 21-year-old Nathan De Jong were each charged with first degree murder for Suminder Grewal’s death. The two accused men are known to police and investigators are firm in their belief that this was a targeted incident.

Mr. Powery-Hooker and Mr. De Jong will appear before a judge in B.C. Provincial Court on August 6, 2019.

We urge anyone who had recent contact with Calvin Powery-Hooker and/or Nathan De Jong to contact IHIT as soon as possible, says Sergeant Frank Jang of IHIT. IHIT is appealing to the public for dash cam video from drivers who were travelling along 152 Street between 32 Avenue and 96 Avenue around the time of the shooting.

Anyone with information, who have yet to come forward to police, is asked to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca

Should you wish to remain anonymous, please contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

No further information will be released as the matter is now before the court.
