While Canada’s jobless rate jumped to 6.1 per cent in March, B-C gained more jobs. 

B-C and Ontario were the only two provinces to report an increase in jobs last month, with 66-hundred more people employed in this province. 

Jobs Minister Brenda Bailey says almost all of B-C’s gains in March were in full-time employment, with many of those going to women. 

The jump in the unemployment rate Canada-wide comes with higher borrowing costs on businesses and strong population growth, which adds to the country’s labour supply.

The cap on new student visas will be implemented for this year and next. The number of new visas handed out this year will be capped at 364,000, a 35 per cent decrease from the nearly 560,000 issued last year.
