Snail Mail Out: Alberta Switching To E-Reminders For ID, Licence Renewals, To Save $3 Million A Year

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 03 Mar, 2016 10:56 AM
EDMONTON — The Alberta government is switching to electronic reminders for registration, licence and identification card renewals.

Danielle Larivee, acting minister of Service Alberta, says the move will save taxpayers $3 million a year.

She says mailing government reminders is a dated practice and an unnecessary expense and it will stop in April.

However, Albertans with disabilities will continue to receive reminders via the mail and seniors over 70 will receive mailed reminders until April 1, 2017.

The government will make drivers aware of the change in a public ad campaign, and expects registry agents to take a proactive role in reminding drivers when to renew their licence and registration.

It says drivers can set up an free reminder by visiting a local registry agent.

"During these tough economic times, it's particularly important for government to find smart ways to save taxpayers' money," Larivee said in a news release Wednesday.

Robyn Young, president of the Association of Alberta Registry Agents, says drivers can renew their vehicle registrations at any registry agent office or online.

"Visit e-registry.ca to renew your vehicle registration, sign up for e-reminders for your registration and drivers licence renewals or even pay your traffic fines online," Young said.
