Edmonton's police chief says a heavily armed suspect acted alone when he entered city hall, fired shots and threw a Molotov cocktail from the building's second floor.

Dale McFee says the shooter entered through the parkade and fired shots with a long gun that could fire multiple rounds, shattering glass in the building.

Police said no injuries were reported. Officers arrested one person and were doing a sweep of the building. 

Surrounding roads were also closed and people were asked to avoid the area.

City councillors and the mayor had been at a scheduled meeting of the emergency advisory committee.

Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi spoke about to the nature of the incident in a social media post on X.

Loud bangs can be heard in video footage of the meeting, before people are told to go to a safe location.

Four unoccupied homes have been badly damaged after an early morning fire in Burnaby.  Fire officials say that the homes were slated for demolition. Summers says they needed 42 firefighters and 11 trucks to knock down the blaze.
