Shortage of lifeguards at Vancouver beaches

The Vancouver Park Board says several beaches had a shortage of lifeguards this long weekend and it told swimmers taking a dip that they were doing so at their own risk.

The board says Sunset Beach, Spanish Banks West and Second Beach were all without lifeguards on Sunday and Monday.

Hey swimmers! If you plan to hit the water today, due to lifeguard shortage, there are limited drop-in spots at New Brighton and Second Beach pools. Also, there will be no lifeguards on duty at Sunset Beach, Second Beach and Spanish Banks West - swimming's at your own risk. pic.twitter.com/B2pnktAJnF

It says the shortage also resulted in limited drop-in spots at city-owned pools at New Brighton and Second Beach.

The board said on Twitter Monday that Spanish Banks West remained unguarded as the May long weekend came to a close.

While a 10-year-old girl was walking home from Panorama Heights Elementary school located at 1455 Johnson Street in Coquitlam, they were approached by two unknown adult females in a vehicle. The suspects asked the girl to get into the vehicle for treats. The girl ran away to a nearby Coquitlam City Bylaw officer for assistance.
