Search Ends With Gunfire After Man Shot Dead On Saskatchewan Reserv: RCMP

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 30 Mar, 2016 01:29 PM
  • Search Ends With Gunfire After Man Shot Dead On Saskatchewan Reserv: RCMP
REGINA — Police say the search for the suspect in a fatal shooting on a northern Saskatchewan reserve has ended with gunfire and the man's death.

RCMP told residents of the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation to stay inside their homes on Tuesday after a shooting outside the community's health centre left a 56-year-old man dead.

Police searched for a man who was spotted leaving the scene on an ATV and wearing camouflage, but they did not confirm whether he was connected to the shooting.

Late in the afternoon, police say they located a 59-year-old man on the First Nation who investigators think was the suspect.

They say in a news release that while police were at the scene, a firearm was discharged, and the man was later pronounced dead in hospital in Shellbrook.

The release says RCMP did not fire their weapons.

"Investigators believe this adult male is the suspect in the death of the 56-year-old male from earlier this date on the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation," the release stated.

"We do not believe there are additional suspects in relation to this incident."

Police say the suspect who died was from the community.

The RCMP said it has asked for the Saskatoon Police Service to investigate the circumstances leading up to the gun being fired. It said that to ensure transparency, the Saskatoon police will report the results to the justice ministry and the attorney general.

Police thanked residents of the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, which is about 165 kilometres north of Saskatoon, for their co-operation during the incident.
