SPARWOOD, B.C. — Members of a search and rescue unit in southeastern B.C. say the team is still operational but much of its equipment has been destroyed by fire.

A blaze broke out Saturday in the building housing equipment and life-saving supplies for the Elk Valley-based Sparwood Search and Rescue.

In a Facebook post, the team says the loss of equipment and vehicles is estimated at about $175,000, while damage to the building is expected to reach $100,000.

Everything was insured but members say donations will be gratefully accepted.

Recent posts on social media also confirm the team's command unit, both trucks and several snowmobiles were not damaged.

No one was in the building when the fire occurred and the cause remains under investigation.
