Saskatchewan Premier Says Governor General Shouldn't Mock People Of Faith

The Canadian Press, 09 Nov, 2017 11:25 AM
REGINA — Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall says Gov. Gen. Julie Payette should avoid denigrating faiths that believe in a creator.

Wall says in a letter to Payette that he's concerned about her recent comments that some say mocked the religious beliefs of millions of Canadians.

The premier says in the letter that Payette is well qualified to serve as Governor General given her record of public service and professional achievements.

But he adds her comments do not meet the standard of conduct that comes with the position.

Payette has faced criticism for a speech last week that some say mocked people of faith, while praising Canada's tolerance and freedom of religion.

She noted that people are still debating and questioning whether life was the result of divine intervention or happened naturally.
