Sask. Gov Wraps Up Public Consultations On Farmland Ownership Restrictions

The Canadian Press, 12 Aug, 2015 11:52 AM
CALGARY — Saskatchewan's agriculture minister Lyle Stewart says almost all options are on the table as the government considers the future of farmland ownership restrictions in the province.

But Lyle Stewart says the government won't be going back to the days of restricting farmland ownership to residents of Saskatchewan.

Although other Canadians are allowed to own Saskatchewan farmland, Stewart says there is a "blank slate" on whether foreign and institutional investors should be allowed to do so as well.

On Monday the province wrapped up close to three months of public consultations on the issue.

The government received nearly 3,200 responses to its survey on the issue, with 62 per cent of coming from farmers. Only six per cent of respondents were non-residents.

Stewart said the survey results will be released in a few weeks and a policy decision will be made a few weeks after that.
